The Daggers started quite brightly, but this was to be a false dawn as they quickly faded out and Basingstoke came into the game much more. Janney had the first chance with a header at the back post that Tarr held at the second attempt.

Janney almost set up Charlery soon after. As he ran into the box with the ball he was hacked but stayed up to cross to Charlery but Tarr got there first to stop the danger.

Hill nearly set up Stein as he played a measured pass through the defence and again Tarr was alert to come off his line quickly to smother the ball. Janney also put Stein through but he was given offside.

However, Basingstoke pushed the Daggers back and some sloppy defending gave 'Stoke two goals within ten minutes. The first came when a free kick was quickly taken, albeit nowhere near where the offence took place, and the right winger had time to square to Davis who stroked the ball into the far bottom corner.

The Daggers continued to stutter and Sills gave them a two goal lead. Roberts' poor kick gave possession to the home side and they swept forward before Sills finished a cross as he slid onto the ball and guided it inside the post.

The second half soon showed the Daggers that the home defence was rather dodgy and that goals could be scored if some decent football was played, the introduction of McDougald helping. Stein had a superb chance when he was set up by a low pass from the left that he put over from 6 yards despite being totally unmarked.

Charlery soon got the away team back into the match though. A long ball forward was headed out to Charlery who volleyed the ball goalwards, and Tarr couldn't quite keep it out, the ball going in via the inside of the post.

Charlery put a similar chance wide soon after as he hit a volley just wide of the far post from just outside the area. The Daggers also hit the post, a right wing inswinging cross being left by the defence as they thought it was going out, only for it to smash against the far post but nobody could net the rebound.

Mark Janney wasted a great chance as he got behind the defence with a good run, but he took his time before placing the shot into the side netting from an acute angle.

Danny Hill fired over from 25 yards as the Daggers created chance after chance but didn't put them away. Junior McDougald did have the ball in the net, but it was disallowed for a disputed offside, Terry's inswinging cross headed into the top corner by Junior, only for the linesman to deny him.

A little while later, it happened again, Stein heading down to Shipp who lobbed the keeper to send the fans into raptures only for the linesman to deny the Daggers yet again.

Terry had a superb chance as the Daggers continued to dominate, dribbling through the middle before passing his shot just wide of the post with a great one-on-one chance.

Basingstoke almost gave the Daggers two goals, a clearance from the edge of the six yard box flashing just wide of the upright and a clearing header from a similar position looking as if it was about the drop in, but it went just wide.

Roberts had to a make a good save as Basingstoke made a rare break, stretching at full length to reach an attempted lob before pouncing on the loose ball to clear the danger.

However, as the game moved into the final minutes, goalkeeper Tony Roberts decided to partake in a bit of a foray into the opposing half. Coming up for a corner, he stayed up the field despite play resuming as the Daggers kept possession, and played as an outfield player. However, he soon had to go backafter Basingstoke threatened to win possession.

Into injury time now, and again Roberts came up for the corner, but this time with deadly effect. The corner came in and pinged around the box before landing at Roberts' feet and he cooly sidefooted home from ten yards to take it to a replay.
