This was an eventful game which gave the Daggers a real competitive pre-season game compared to the friendlies where nobody tries too hard. However, the incidents were not all good, as Canvey tried to win by kicking Dagenham off the pitch. Filthy is one word that springs to mind. The referee also did not help with a series of poor decisions.

Canvey were first out of the blocks and scored within minutes. A ball behind the left wing-back was crossed into the box and finished by Duffy into the top corner. After this though, the Daggers were on top and could have had a hatful.

Brennan tried his range with a long shot that was too central and easily fielded by the keeper, before a series a clear cut chances that will need to be taken if the Daggers are to challenge next season.

Danny Shipp connected with a header from a corner and was unmarked but sent the ball over the top from 6 yards.

McDougald had a good chance as he beat two men and cut into the box but he side footed his shot to close to the keeper and he went down to save. McDougald was not helped by the fact that every time he got the ball, Canvey's number 6 kicked him in the ankles without the referee doing anything.

Danny Shipp had another good chance when he met a cross at the back post and after Goodwin had miskicked, Shipp put the ball inches wide of the far post.

A well worked free kick was laid back to Brennan who blasted goalwards only for it to be deflected up into the air. As the keeper came to get it he dropped it under challenge from Shipp and was lucky to pounce on the loose ball.

Canvey's number 6 was finally dismissed towards the end of the half though. After a series of fouls throughout the half, he kicked Heffer as he went through. Heffer took exception to it and a 20 man brawl ensued but it didn't stop the defender being shown the red.

In the second half, the Daggers continued to dominate and had several more chances. Mark Janney met a cross at the back post and he sidefooted goalwards only for it to strike the keeper on the leg as he was caught in no mans land and deflect to safety.

Danny Shipp had another chance from just outside the 6 yard box when he met a loose ball and volleyed goalwards with his left foot but the ball went well over the bar.

McDougald had two more chances for the home side. He firstly latched onto a throughball and volleyed powerfully just over the angle of post and bar and then later he chased a long ball and hit goalwards but miscued badly and it went well over.

Finally the Daggers got the goal they deserved from Shipp. He was put through on goal with a great pass and took it on before finishing low into the bottom corner of the goal.

Tony Lock could have finished it when he latched onto a through ball but smashed it wide of the far post despite having time and space.

Ashley Vickers brought the teams back to level numbers in the second half. He went into a tackle on the left with a Canvey player and as he lay on the ground, Canvey's number 11 came steaming into him. Vickers seemed to lash out and was dismissed.

Extra time came and with it came Canvey's only real period of pressure. They had a couple of good chances that were both put well wide as the were met at the back post from crosses.

Canvey did manage to score in the first period of extra time though when a forward ran with the ball across the pitch before smashing it just inside the post from 18 yards.

The Daggers were not going to be robbed of a win they richly deserved though and as the second period advanced, Goodwin met a corner and rose above everyone to head into the top corner.

Canvey decided that would try to fight themselves out of trouble again and one forward elbowed Rooney in the head for which Rooney was mysteriously booked.

In the end it went to penalties though. Brennan took the first kick and put it away. McDougald, Shipp and Lock followed suit before Robbo made a great save from Canvey's fourth kick low to his right.

It was left to Gallagher to despatch the winning kick and the Daggers regained the Essex Senior Cup in front of a home crowd and did a lap of honour with the trophy.
