The Daggers started without the suspended Goodwin, and played a back three of Rooney, Vickers and Smith. Charlery started up front in preference to McDougald, which seemed strange given Exeter's lack of pace at the back. Shipp continued in midfield with Danny Hill confined to the bench.

Within ten seconds, Roberts had to be on his guard, as Smith was tackled in his own half and Tomlinson ran through, only for Roberts to save as he rushed his shot under attention from the defence.

It soon became clear that Exeter's threat was down the wings and Heffer soon moved into the defence to make up a back four. Exeter had several crosses in the half which were either of poor quality or dealt with by Roberts and his defence.

Roberts also had to save an effort from the edge of the box, but other than this, the first half was fairly even. Shipp had a chance when he ran down the left and seemed through on goal but he was superbly tackled at the last second.

Charlery had a similar chance when he was put through and as he bore down on goal, he was caught by a defender and tackled for a corner. The Daggers also had several crosses into the box that caused panic in the defence but nobody could capitalise. In the second half, the Daggers struggled as Exeter upped the pace and put a lot of pressure on the visiting defence. They had a series of corner which ended with Roberts making a good save from a header.

Roberts also had to be quick off his line to smother a shot inside the box with a goal looking likely. Roberts also had to dive forwards to push away a cross meaning the volley from 18 yards was mistimed and flew wide of the post.

The Daggers did muster one goal attempt in the game, a Stein header from 18 yards that looped up and down into Van Heusden's arms, although it was going wide anyway.

Despite Exeter's pressure, the Daggers defence did very well to keep chances to a minimum, especially as the forwards and wingers did little to hold the ball up.

As the game drew to a close, there was one last home chance, as Tomlinson tried an over header kick but Roberts stretched an arm up to catch his looping shot and secure a replay.
