The scoreline is what will go down in the history books, but the truth of the matter is that it flatters Ipswich considerably. The second half saw tiredness creep into the Daggers game, but until then, it was at least an even game. The stats show even chances, but the only difference between the two sides was that Ipswich took their's.
The Daggers started by far the better of the two sides and forced five early corners that nearly saw the Tractor Boys slice a clearance into their own net. But although they couldn't score from the corners, the home side kept going and camped in the Ipswich half. The goal that they deserved came after 18 minutes, and as it was against Charlton last year, it was McDougald.
Hayzelden tried to run through the middle and played it through to McDougald, who went on and slotted the ball calmly into the net to send the home crowd wild.
Ipswich put on some pressure as they sensed a cup upset, but chances were few and far between as the home defence shut them out. However, they did create a goal just after the half hour.
Janney was left with two players to mark and did his best but couldn't prevent Reuser's cross which found the unmarked Peralta who headed across Roberts and got the luck they needed as it hit the post and went in.
Indeed, Ipswich were getting a lot of the luck as their miskicks and clearances always seemed to fall to their own players. However, the Daggers weren't going to give up and nearly got back in front as a header from a corner went just wide of the goal.
On the stroke of half time, Ipswich took a very undeserved lead though. A cross came to Magilton on the edge of the box who hit a dipping volley that gave Roberts no chance and flew into the net.
Janney almost hit straight back as Hayzelden crossed to him and although he was unmarked with only the keeper to beat and inside the box, he somehow flashed his shot across the goal and wide.
The hope was there for the Daggers in the second. They had posed a big problem from set pieces and they managed to play some good football against their illustrious opponents.
Early in the half, Roberts did well to come off his line and block a shot but other than this, Ipswich struggled for chances despite some early pressure.
Goodwin could have levelled the scores with a header from a corner as he rose unmarked, but he unusually headed the ball over the bar. The Daggers continued to hurry the away side into rushed clearances that were going all over the place, but a lot of the time they fell to their own players.
Very soon after, Ipswich finished the tie. On the counter attack, the home side were a little short at the back and Peralta received a left wing cross to thump the ball across Roberts and into the top corner.
However, the Daggers should have been back in the game as a penalty decision was turned down by the referee who had seemed to be siding with the Premiership side at times. McDougald chased through and as he got into the box, he was bundled over in full view of the linesman only to be turned down.
Shipp also hit a volley just wide of the angle after McDougald's flick on, and Mark Brennan also hit a great shot across the keeper from 20 yards but the keeper handled it well.
The Daggers began to get tired after this and the effort they had put into the game had clearly taken its toll as they tried in vain to chase the game. Mistakes started to creep in and towards the end Stewart went through and slotted past Roberts to distort the scoreline.
Roberts had to make one good save at the end to deny a fifth from a corner, but you can't help think what might have been if that little bit of 'Cup Luck' had gone in favour of the Daggers and the finishing had been a little more clinical.
