Poor is the word that describes the game. Dagenham were poor, Leigh were poor and the officials were poor. Despite the performance, the Daggers had chances in the first and last 15 minutes in which they could have taken the points, but instead let a depleted Leigh take them with a single goal.
Lee Goodwin returned for the home side, and the start of the first half saw the Daggers waste several chances. The first came when Westhead in the Leigh goal scuffed a clearance to Lock who, instead of trrying to chip into the open goal, passed to Janey and the moment had gone.
Brennan found himself in time and space when Hayzelden squared the ball to him, and came forward to the edge of the box before trying to chip Westhead who well off his line but wastefully put it over.
Shipp wasted another chance when Janey crossed to the back post and he tried a volley but didn't make contact with the ball when a simple header would have seen a goal.
Shipp also volleyed wide from long range with a powerful shot that threatened to loop in, and McGavin hit a free kick towards the bottom corner which was well saved by Westhead. Hayzelden also tried a right foot shot from 20 yards which was well held by the Leigh keeper.
However, after this early pressure which should really have seen the Daggers move out of sight, passed without a goal and Leigh came into the game. They battled hard and although they had to take three men off in the first 35 minutes, they kept working and the Daggers lost their rhythm completely.
The early promise turned into an awful display with long balls hit forward, passes misplaced and general poor play. The midfield didn't work hard enough with McGavin strolling around and looking completely disintersted in the game.
In the second half, Leigh carried on as they had left off in the first half, and unfortunately the Daggers and the officials did as well. The referee constantly gave free kicks for minimal fouls by both sides when he would have been better to let the game flow. The linemen both gave offside after offside when it was quite clear that most of the decisions were wrong.
Fisher had a good chance from 18 yards with a left foot shot that flew high and wide, but the warning signs were there and the Daggers soon fell behind to a sloppy goal.
A cross from the right was met by substitute Hallows, who, with the defence completely AWOL, had an easy task to head the ball over Roberts and in via the underside of the bar.
Roberts had to be alert to twice smother at the feet of Leigh forwards and Maamria nearly increased the lead when he hit a cross from the right way off target and it looped up and struck the top of the bar.
The game degenerated once more though as both sides played awful stuff with long balls going both ways and the officials breaking the game up as often as possible. However, as the game drew to a close, the Daggers came to life again.
Mark Janney had a 25 yard shot that fizzed just over the bar after the ball had ben laid back to him and Matt Jones headed over after Janney's cross to the far post.
The Leigh keeper had to make two good stops as he tipped over a long shot and then made a fantastic save from McGavin who actually managed to strain into action for a few seconds. He hit a left foot shot with great power from the keeper's right of the box, and the keeper did brilliantly to tip round the post.
Matt Jones could have scored when he was put through with a great pass that was along the floor for once. He cut inside and although he only had the keeper to beat, he overhit the ball and it went wide.
Danny Shipp hit a shot goalwards after a goalmouth scramble following a corner and although it beat the keeper, it did not beat the defender on the line who headed clear.
Towards the end Leigh wasted another free header from a right wing cross that fell into Roberts' arms and at the death Stein found himself through after a long ball but his control let him down and the ball was put out for a corner. The corner saw Roberts come up but it was to no avail and the final whistle went to end a poor display by all involved.
