After the incidents of the week which saw Leyton Orient manager Tommy Taylor leave the Brisbane Road hotseat and Paul Brush appointed, Orient were always going to be out to impress the new boss. With some new faces making trying to win places such as keeper Morris, but with most of the Taylor team intact, Orient set out to make their mark early.
The Daggers also made some changes as Danny Hayzelden was given a game, and he turned in a superb second half display. Paul Gothard was also given his second start of the season in the home goal.
The Daggers seemed in disarray for the opening minutes as Orient exploded out of the blocks and left the home side standing. Steve Watts missed a sitter as he received a cross inside the box and guided the ball wide of the goal from 2 yards out.
Smith also tried to give Orient an early lead as he met a left wing corner only to thump his near post header against the post from 6 yards. However, asfter this early shock, the Daggers got into their game and created some chances of their own.
First, Steve McGavin went on a run down the right before cutting inside and curling the ball towards the far top corner which the O's keeper did well to turn over the bar. Stein also had a good chance to give the home side the lead.
Some more neat play on the right ended when the ball was crossed to Stein and he met it with a strike that was unfortunately well over the bar from inside the box.
The half was to belong to Orient though, and after a free kick was fired well over the bar, Gothard was forced into a save. A scramble in the box ended when the ball broke to the side and it was fired goalwards only for Gothard to get down and block the ball to his left.
Orient took the lead shortly before half-time with a corner that was similar to the earlier one that had resulted in the opst coming to the Daggers' rescue. This time, Smith met the ball and thumped his header into the near top corner to give the keeper no chance.
With seconds remaining, they almost made it two as a volley from 8 yards was fired just wide of the upright. The second half started with Shipp hitting a great long shot just over the bar from 20 yards, but after this, Orient were in control. It looked as if the game was over as McLean made it two.
A right wing cross was left by all and not cleared at the back post which left McLean to run onto the ball and fire it into the top corner. However, the Daggers were not about to lie down and were soon back in it.
Almost immediately, Stein shielded the ball before passing to McGavin who put a great cross into the box which was met by Heffer at the back post who guided his header back across the keeper and into the far corner.
From then until the end of the game, there was only one team in the game. The Daggers began to play some much better football and torn Orient's hapless defence apart at times.
Danny Hayzelden beat two men on the left and whipped in a great cross that was headed just over his own crossbar by Smith for a corner. Hayzelden was inspired after this and almost scored a great goal.
He picked up the ball on the right and got to the by-line before beating two men and coming inside only for his shot to be blocked by a defender 6 yards out. Not to be discouraged, he almost scored with a volley shortly after.
The ball came out to him on the left and he hit a left foot volley that looked like it was going to sneak inside the far post but it spun just wide as the keeper stood and watched.
Just when it seemed the deserved goal would never come, it did, and again from Heffer. Vickers won a header in the Orient box but only succeeded in heading it up in the air. However, he again won the header and the ball came down to Heffer who was unmarked 8 yards out and he fired the ball into the roof of the net.
As extra time started, it was marred by a nasty incident that the referee failed to deal with. Heffer couldn't climb high enough to win a header at the back post, and fell onto the floor. However, McGhee and Harris seemed to have a problem and actually kicked Heffer whilst he was on the ground. For some reason, only Harris was punished of the offenders, and only with a booking, and inexplicably, Heffer was also booked.
The Daggers were not going to let this affect them though, and after more pressure, the winner finally came. Goodwin met a corner at the back post and headed the ball down. It bounced up and was about to go in via the underside of the bar, and as the keeper reached up, the ball squirmed between his hand and the bar and dropped into the net, as the Daggers won on the Golden Goal rule.
