Jason Broom was honoured by a crowd of 2432 in his testimonial game to mark his ten years at Victoria Road. Jason could not start himself due to injury but did come on for the final few seconds and received presentations before the game. A familiar face in Steve Conner also turned out.
West Ham sent some first team members but their squad was largely youth and bit-part players which earned them criticism from both sets of fans.
The visitors did start with Gary Charles, Svetoslav Todorov, Joe Cole, Scott Minto, Jermain Defoe and Craig Forrest, but Cole and Todorov were both taken off at half time and when on the pitch did not take part very often.
However, the lack of strength through the centre of defence and midfield worked to the Daggers advantage and they could have found themselves three up within the first quarter of the game.
Mark Stein shook free a defender to hit a volley that went over when he had time to pick his place, Forrest had to save well low to his right from Shipp and McGavin had a shot blocked after linking with Stein.
However, West Ham's first real attack brought a goal from Todorov. Some good build up ended with Todorov curling the ball around Gothard and into the top corner of the goal from the edge of the box.
West Ham had a couple of wayward shots and the Hammers did show a flash of brilliance when Joe Cole and Jermain Defoe showed some tricks around the box ending with a poor finish.
In the second half, Omer Riza gave the Hammers a two goal lead. He got the ball on the edge of the box and jinked past a couple of defenders before slotting past Gothard. Defoe had a similar chance but it was well saved by Gothard.
Defoe nearly got on the scoresheet as he curled the ball in from the right and it went over Gothard and struck the inside of the far post before rebounding to safety where Goodwin leathered it clear.
The Daggers did not give up though and got back into the game through McGavin who received the ball in the box and blasted it into the net past Forrest.
Towards the end of the game, Steve Conner entered the field and took on the job of marking Jermain Defoe. But it was Conner, not Defoe who cam closest to scoring, as in the final minutes, Conner powered a header goalwards from a corner, but it was deflected in by Lock.
With seconds remaining, the man himself came off the bench and although he didn't touch the ball, he got a rapturous applause in honour of his service to the club. A truly great man.
Thanks to Dave for some bits I forgot!!
