Erith & Belvedere 3 Daggers 3
Friendly - 22/07/02

The Daggers fielded several young players in this game as the first team was split between this game and the one at Thurrock. Tim Cole was left to marshall the back line which included 3 unknowns to the crowd, McGown, Glynn and David. Danny Shipp captained the side from the middle of the field with Danny Hill, and they were flanked by McGavin and Berquez. McDougald played up front with another unknown quantity, Joe Tambooei.

The first half was a disaster as the Daggers went three down and barely had a shot. They could have had a penalty as McDougald was brought down but the referee did not agree. The visiting defence was appalling, as every time the home team ran at them, they inevitably found themselves through on goal. Tony Roberts made several excellent saves to keep the score manageable.

The first two came after people ran at the defence and on occasions where Roberts couldn't save, they both finished into Roberts' bottom right corner of the goal. The third goal came just before the break when the defence failed to clear and the striker got to the ball first to poke it past Roberts.

The second half saw a much better performance, although the defence was still a concern. Tim Cole had a free header that he put straight at the keeper, and Joe Tambooe had a great chance when he was free from McDougald's pass but he shot over the top from 12 yards. Berquez did score though after they all missed a right wing ball in, and he smashed the ball beyond the keeper with his left foot.

Danny Hill was running things by now and was absolutely superb. He continually ran at the defence and they could not get the ball off him. McDougald grabbed the second when he went on one of many jinking runs into the box and was brought down, getting up to despatch the penalty himself.

McDougald was taking the mickey out of the defence every time by now and he made ex-Dagger Marvin Neufville look silly on a couple of occasions, who seems to now think he is a defender after fruitless efforts as a striker. Neufville was not to be beaten in the air however.

The Daggers equalised as Hill scored the goal he deserved. Tambooei did well to turn the defender and get a left footed cross in, and Hill steamed in a the back post to cushion the ball in with his left foot.

D & R: Tony Roberts, Pat David, Tim Cole, Andy Glynn (Matt Phillips), Tony McGown (Andy Glynn)(Steve McGavin), Steve McGavin (Alexander Varela), Danny Hill, Danny Shipp, Ollie Berquez, Joe Tambooei, Junior McDougald.
East Thurrock 0 Daggers 1
Friendly - 22/07/02
By Simon Newell
The Daggers came away from Rookery Hill with their third pre-season friendly win on Monday night with a winning goal scored by Emmanuel Sarpong. Sarpong is a trialist with the club and has played in the Belgium League for Racing Genk and Westerlo. His turn and volley flew into the top corner of the net on 52 minutes. The Daggers started brightly fielding six first teamers and three from the last seasons PASE U19's team. Also, Sunny Nwachukwu started, a 26 year old Nigerian attacking midfield player who has spent a long period with Montreal Impact in the American A League. Steve West was in good form and had two fine chances in the first half. His first was a low drive that was pushed round the post by Marrable and his second a shot which flew over the bar. Marrable tipped Danny Hayzelden's header over the bar after he was found by Paul Terry and then on the stroke of half time, Paul Terry put a chance the wrong side of the post. The home side changed their side and their strip for the second half but it was the Daggers who changed the score. Emmanuel Sarpong controlled the ball well and slotted the ball under the diving goalkeeper to put the visitors ahead on 52 minutes. The hosts had their first effort on target shortly after through Chris Logan and Paul Gothard was forced to make a diving save to his left. Sarpong had a golden chance to extend the Daggers lead after two defenders collided but with only the goalkeeper to beat, he shot the ball at the East Thurrock keeper. The Daggers final chance of the game came from a Nwachukwu cross which clipped the upright and came off a Thurrock defender but Caton managed to save the ball on the line.
