The only change in the Daggers' ranks for this match was the return of Danny Hill to the first team in Heffer's absence, presumed injured. There was also a welcome return for Tim Cole on the bench, whilst youngster Chambers continued alongside him. Hereford had pretty much a full team to chose from.
The start of the game saw an away team who had obviously done their homework on the Daggers' 3-4-1-2 formation, and immediately set about exploiting the wings which left the Daggers completely out of shape as a mixture of midfield and defence tried to plug the gaps. Bad finishing and good goalkeeping were all that separated Hereford from an early lead. There was calamity in the defence as Matthews made an initial block on Parry only for the winger cum striker to have his second attempt foiled by Roberts. Parry again had a chance when he received a good long pass and shot, only for Roberts to save and then Williams put the rebound high and wide of the gaping goal.
The injury to Paul Bruce allowed Vickers to enter the fray and he immediately gave the defence a more solid look and allowed the Daggers to come into the game. Junior worked himself a shooting opportunity and curled just past the far post with the keeper beaten. Then Junior beat two men in the corner and squared for Shipp whose shot was blocked. West also headed wide of the goal, but he made no mistake with his second chance. Junior flicked on, and just as he had done in the away fixture, albeit from closer in, West let it bounce and then volleyed into the top corner from the edge of the box.
The rest of the half petered out slightly although it was the Daggers who had more of the territorial and possession advantage. The second half was a similar story as the Daggers tried to finish the game off. They had a treble chance in the space of a minute to do just that. West flicked on for Junior and as the keeper came out he had to take it quickly, the ball going through Baker's legs and scraping his thigh to deflect wide. From the corner, Matthews thundered in and Baker made a marvelous reaction save from point blank range to tip over. Then from the corner again, a defender at the near post deflected the ball onto his keeper's shins and it bounced to safety.
Then, as Junior tried to get onto a superb Hill pass through the defence, he went down under a heavy challenge from Tretton. It appeared to be a fair tackle however, but the linesman saw differently and waved his flag furiously before Tretton, who was the last man, was sent off. The free kick saw Baker spill but fortunately for him, he was able to pounce on the loose ball. This spurred Hereford on and they spent the rest of the game pushing the Daggers back.
Roberts had to save with his feet from Smith's header from a corner, and Hereford also missed a point blank chance which went wide of the post. He also had to stop Parry twice more as the Daggers held on to the all important three points.
