The Daggers were forced into team and formation changes as they went in search of the record equalling 10th consecutive Conference win, originally achieved by Macclesfield in 1994/5. Vickers, Stein and Terry were all injured and the switch to 3-5-2 saw Potts come in as the third man at the back, Watts back up front and Danny Hill called upon to pull the strings in midfield.

Margate were soon forced into change as well, three minutes gone when keeper Smith collided with Iain O'Connell, giving the captain concussion and a very swollen face and head with suspected fractured skull or cheekbone. This was his first start after a broken leg. This saw the introduction of Keister who was probably responsable for most of the 17 fouls Margate notched up.

There was little goalmouth action in the swirling wind but Junior had the first Daggers chance when he beat the defender and his goalbound shot was deflected over the bar by a defender. Shipp then dragged a left foot effort wide when a pass would have put Junior through after drawing the defender.

Margate's best chance was from an indirect free kick inside the box after Tarkan Mustafa had passed back to Roberts who picked the ball up. The ball was put into the wall before Oates put the follow up into the side netting. The Daggers took the lead just before half time. Danny Hill received the ball and turned his marker. He ran at the defence and after getting into the box, the outside of his right foot curled the ball inside the far post byond Smith.

After half time the Daggers kept the game under control without creating much, but Matthews, Potts and Smith kept any attacks at bay. Shipp again fired wide with a long shot, and Junior went on a run before his heavy touch past the last man let the keeper come and collect. The lead was added to by sub Mark Janney with a superb solo goal. He played a one-two with Junior to come inside and dribbled past several defenders, shooting home into the bottom corner with his left foot from the edge of the box.

The game was finished with five minutes left by another sub, Steve West. He intially got clear and fired across Smith who parried to the feet of Shipp. His initial miscontrol allowed the defence to recover but he fired it back across the face of goal and West thundered his shot home, taking the opportunity to remind Garry Hill of his name and number.
