It was a rather irregular Daggers side that faced Ryman Division 1S visitors Marlow, but they still managed a good performance and a comfortable win. The only starters from the team that played at Plymouth were Heffer, Janney and McGrath, with one other, West, coming off the bench late on. This gave a chance to some of the squad players to impress the boss. Special mention must go to Timmy Cole who made his 200th appearance in a Daggers shirt. Lets hope there are many more to come.
The Daggers started fast and it soon became apparant that Marlow were going to have a tough time getting into the game as the home side kept the ball for long periods and created many chances. Within minutes, Fletcher went through and shot at the keeper, and then soon after he was halted by the last man despite Stein standing unmarked to his right. Stein also didn't react quick enough when Carroll's poor goal kick fell for him. Danny Hill's calming influence in midfield meant the Daggers played more relaxed and assured football, and it was no suprise when he put Stein through to start the scoring after five minutes.
It wasn't long before it was two, Fletcher going through and after finally sitting the keeper down with his umpteenth dummy, he slotted home. There was also a chance for Janney who went through and lifted his shot, allowing Carroll to push it behind as he rushed out. Cole couldn't quite connect with a corner, and Goodwin's header from another Hill delivery forced a save from Carroll. Cole's first overhead kick of the day from another corner seemed to have gifted Stein a goalline chance, but he was flagged offside. Hill also chipped over the bar. Marlow's only replies were a shot wide of the target, and a cross-shot that almost beat Gothard but he managed to palm it out.
The game seemed to be finished with ten minutes before the break, as Stein's first time finish made it three-nil after a loose ball came to him. This gave Garry Hill a chance to see some of the youngsters in action after half-time, Vaughan and Lewis coming on for Heffer and McGrath. By now, the Daggers were relaxing on their lead and got a wake up call from Marlow soon after. A long throw was completely missed by Gothard and this let Ryder in behind him for a tap in. Cole then headed over the bar twice, but there was not stopping his superb curler just before the hour. Vaughan's simple pass to Cole, teed the ball up for a first time shot that curled around and over the keeper into the top corner.
The game died a bit after this, but Marlow again fired a warning wide of the goal, before Gibson pulled a goal back. Carroll then had to be alert to tip away Cole's overhead kick which seemed destined for the top corner, and he then dived to his left to push away a long range effort. However, there was no stopping West, who thundered in on Hill's pinpoint cross and put the ball into the bottom corner with a trademark header.
