Daggers 0 Queens Park Rangers 3
Friendly - 02/08/02

Being the last friendly before the season starts next Saturday, it was expected that next week's XI would start this game. The Daggers fielded almost the entire team that finished last season with the exception of Braithwaite in for the departed West, with the rest of the new boys on the bench. It will be interesting if this isn't the team that starts next week as the likelihood is that the players won't have played more than half a game together so far in the build-up.

The Daggers started off shocked by the pace and fitness of the QPR team and were pushed back early on. Indeed, it was just ten minutes before the visitors scored, Richard Pacquette latching onto a simple long ball that beat the unfit Matthews and he simply dispatched the ball past Pullen.

However, the Daggers fought back well and created a stream of chances that should really have seen them into a fair lead but in fact failed to yield a goal. Mark Stein, looking suprisingly sharp for his years, nearly beat the offside trap to give QPR a warning, and minutes later he did. His first finish was poor and allowed Culkin to save but his follow up was even worse, with the keeper stranded, he gave him a chance to get back and again push the ball away.

Braithwaite was put away after a fine flowing move but got the ball stuck under his feet before he could get going, and then he again but his pace couldn't take him away from the challenge of Palmer. Shipp also had a great chance when he got the ball from a throw and hooked it past Culkin only for it to go across goal and safely away.

Ashley Vickers also headed over from a corner, and Paul Terry and Mustafa both tried long range efforts that lacked direction and power. At the other end, Sabin missed the goal spectacularly with a great chance and then Pullen made a superb one-on-one save from Langley to keep the score down to one. It was just one of many saves he had to make to keep the scoreline respectable.

The second half was just as bad defensively, if not worse, but also lacked the good attacking play of the first. An early Matthews header that he should have buried from a couple of yards and a Paul Terry chance from Janney's near-post cross were all that the Daggers could find and other than that it was all QPR.

Pacquette had soon doubled the lead with a cool finish in the bottom corner after the defence was again caught napping, and then Pullen had to make some excellent one-on-one saves to keep it down as the pace of the visiting frontline was too much for the home backline. Bailey blasted well over when well placed and Gallen also missed two chances wide of the post after coming off the bench.

The Daggers started to introduce the new signings, and Chris Piper was impressive with his close control, short passing and battling qualities. The other substitutes struggled to make any impact on the game as the Daggers fitness appeared to be waining later into the game.

Paul Furlong wrapped up the scoring with 12 left on the clock with another clinical finish that showed the difference between the sides. A late cynical challenge on Pullen and also two Clarke Carlisle fouls didn't warrant any sort of punishment from the referee, although the QPR management showed good common sense by substituting Carlisle later on.
