Lee was signed from West Ham United by Ted Hardy after he served his apprenticeship at the East London club. He was not offered a contract but in his early days he was so highly rated in the West Ham youth team, Rio Ferdinand was forced to move into midfield as Lee was preferred in defence to the £18m man. Lee is now a right-back and has made the position his own.
