Tarkan, born in London in 1973, started off at Norwich City as a schoolboy before moving onto Wimbledon. When he didn't make it into a first-teamer, he joined Kettering Town. After a year he moved on to Barnet where he could only make 11 appearances and again, a year later, he moved on to Kingstonian. He spent two years with the Ks, the highlight of which was an FA Trophy win where he scored the winning goal at Wembley. He was snapped up by Rushden & Diamonds after this and won the Conference title with them and also had a trip to Cardiff in the Final of the Third Division Play-Off. After being told he was surplus to requirements, a trial at Coventry City followed where he didn't earn a move and he went on loan to Doncaster. Despite being offered a deal on a permanent basis, he joined the Daggers on a free transfer.
