Mark has an impressive scoring record throughout his career, which has prompted the £2m in total transfer fees he has commanded. Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Mark began his professional career in 1983/4 with Luton. After a few first team games, he was loaned to Aldershot, then of the old Division 4. Once back at the Hatters, he got into the team and during 1986/7 he scored 8 in 21 league games, followed by 11 in 25 league games the next season. QPR then paid £300,000 for his services, but after two unsuccessful years that bore only 4 league goals, he moved to Oxford United. There he played almost every game but only averaged about a goal every 5 games. He moved again after just over 2 years at Oxford to Stoke for £100,000 and it was here that he exploded into form. He averaged more than a goal every other game in his two and a bit seasons and this prompted a £1.5m move to Chelsea. He was at Stamford Bridge for five seasons and his first bore 13 league goals in 18 games. After two good seasons he was frozen out and this prompted loan moves to Stoke, Bournemouth and Ipswich. Bournemouth were impressed with his form and signed him permanently in 1998/9. He averaged more than a goal every three games for the Cherries, scoring 26 goals in 79 league games. During the close season of 2000 he went back to Luton but he was not in the team very often and was released by Joe Kinnear at the end of the season, from where he joined the Daggers.
