Glasgow international airport (GLA) is under two hours away by car and provides a good link with most airlines serving international routes. Car hire/rental is available. Canada and the U.S.A. are particularly well served thus avoiding the need to route via London Heathrow (LHR). Tel no 0141 887 1111.
Edinburgh international airport (EDI) on the East coast of Scotland. Car hire/rental is available. Tel No 0131 333 1000.
Good bus service between the above airports and cities. |
Road and Ferries
It is possible to arrive at Kames by a combination of road/ferry/road using public transport but it can be difficult synchronising the timings of the various forms of transport on the route Glasgow to Gourock (bus or train), ferry (either Western Ferries or CalMac to Hunters Quay/ Dunoon), then bus to Kames.
The same route by car is very easy, as is travel by car on other road routes from Loch Lomond or Oban to Kames. Roads in some parts of Argyll are single track with passing places - be considerate and allow other faster traffic to pass if necessary.
Cycling is not a particular hardship in this modern age with many gears on the average bicycle and there are many spectacular places to rest awhile!
Car fuel - when in the Scottish countryside, filling stations are not as frequent as in cities! It is sensible to fill the tank at the next garage when it half empty, just in case the next garage is a long way away or closed! |
Ferry from Kintyre (Tarbert to Portavadie)
Operated by Caledonian MacBrayne the ferry takes 25 minutes. CalMac telephone 0990 650000. Check with the ferry operator before traveling. |
Travel/Touring in the Area
Some of the roads are narrow single track with passing places - please drive with care and do not use the passing places for picnics. Do consider other road users for example cyclists and walkers. |
Places of Interest to Visit
