A history of Stourport, Worcestershire and the Baldwin family
Home of Baldwin family from c.1812.
John BALDWIN was born in Lower Mitton in about 1812, the son of Thomas BALDWIN. John married Mary JONES from Yarpole, Herefordshire although I have, as yet, been unable to trace the date or place of their marriage. Their first two children, Alice and Mary Ann were born in Lower Mitton in about 1836 and 1837 respectively. By 1840, the family was living in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, where John was working as a boat builder.
By 1851, John and his family had moved back to Lower Mitton and were living in New Street and were still in the same street in 1861. Mary died in 1867 and John married his second wife, Fanny MOLE (nee VINALL), on 31st December 1869 in Brompton, Middlesex.
Stourport history
Stourport owes its existence to the canal network, which came to the area in 1768 with the termination of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal. 1772 saw the completion of the junction between the Staffs & Worcs Canal and the Birmingham Canal, with the canal terminus being built on meadowland to the south-west of the hamlet of Lower Mitton. The new town expanded rapidly and by 1812 five canal basins had been built.
