225g (8oz) Dates
Pinch Bicarbonate of Soda
150ml (1/4 pint) boiling water
75g (3oz) margarine
75g (3oz) castor sugar
1 Egg, size 3, beaten
225g (8oz) self raising flour
75g (3oz) walnuts, chopped.

(1) Heat oven to 180C, 350F, Gas mark 4.Grase and line the base of a 1kg (2lb) loaf tin

(2) Chop the dates, add the bicarbonate of soda and pour the boiling water over them.

(3) Cream the Margarine and sugar, beat in the egg

(4) Stir in the flour and nuts and lastly the dates

(5) Place mixture evenly in the tin and bake for 1 1/4 hours, until firm
