Hubba has started a new mailing list that is open to anybody interested in racing on the Medway.
The mailing list is for anybody to advertise on if they are looking for crew, and for publishing racing notices and results.
Anybody who is interested in this should subscribe to this list at: http://www.upnor.net/mailman/listinfo/medway-racers
This list is not limited to Upnor Sailing Club so USC fun races that are only open to Club members will not be advertised on the medway-racers list.

02/09/06 (Sat) Rounders Match on Blyth Sand - in competition with Hoo Ness Yacht Club
Don't forget the rounders match on the sand off Leigh Creek on Saturday 2nd September. Access is from the creek that leads to Benfleet. Those attending should be there by 11.00 am to make the most of low water. Hopefully we may be joined by Hoo Ness, Queenborough, Lower Halstow and Thurrock clubs so it should be fun. Why not bring a barbecue as well? Mike Prescott

26/08/06 (Sat) Bank Holiday Cruise to Erith / Thurrock
Stop Press - August Bank Holiday Cruise
This was to have been a cruise to Erith or Thurrock but I think three days rolling about on a Thames mooring is too much. Therefore, the venue has been changed to Ramsgate. This does mean an early start for those who like to take the tide but we could punch some and leave later. Please let me know if you intend coming so that I can inform the marina. Mike Prescott

Special thanks to Brian, Ron, Frank, Henry and Colin for repairing the car park gate at the back of the Clubhouse. It had apparently rusted through and fallen off its hinges. After a trip to a local scrap yard to obtain suitable materials the gate is now stronger than ever. Well done crew!

It has been drawn to my attention that a mother was seen letting her toddler run about on the pontoon without a lifejacket on. This is an extremely risky strategy if you love your offspring, if they toddle over the edge they could be swept away by the tide in no time.
For the peace of mind of all of us please ensure that all children on the pontoon are carefully supervised and are wearing an appropriate buoyancy aid.

Security Patrols are useful not just to prevent thefts from our vessels as was proved when Ian Wingate, patrolling the other night was able to contact the owners of a yacht that had come adrift from its stern moorings and was lying alongside the next yacht on the trot.
Fortunately it was calm and no damage was done as the owner was able to re-secure his boat quickly. Thanks go to Ian and Niel on Sweet Kate for their efforts. The boat concerned was on one of the other participating Club's moorings, USC members would never be so careless!

We now have combination padlocks on the pontoon gate and dinghy trolley for the benefit of visiting yachts which do not have a Club key. The combination will be given by ringing the number on the instructions to visiting yachts notice on the end of the pontoon.

I have been in touch with Southern Water to seek official guidance on what we can and cannot use the hoses for during the hosepipe ban and I have good news:
1. Hoses can be used for filling water tanks (domestic use).
2. Hoses can be used with pressure washers to clean hulls.
3. Hoses can be used to wash boats.
However, it is not good to be seen to be wasting water and users of the hoses should not let them run unnecessarily.
So go ahead and fill your tanks and scrub your boat, you are saving energy by saving fuel. But think twice about whether you need to use the hose for washing the topsides because although this is permissible it is almost as easy to use river water and a bucket.

It is my sad duty to report the passing on of one of our Club's finest Members, Tim Johnson. I have no details except that he died recently in hospital after a short illness.
Tim has done a great deal for the Club during his long membership (since 1963), especially his exceptional labours in organising the construction of the Clubhouse and was rewarded with a Life Membership and a free mooring for his yacht Skol.
He will be much missed.
