1-3 Pier Place, Lower Upnor, Rochester, Kent ME2 4UY Tidal River Medway a tidal estuary - well, the bit we sail in is, between Rochester Bridge and Sheerness
it twists and turns, each reach is different
it is always wide enough to tack against the wind
when there is no wind there is always the tide
when it blows up too strong to want to venture out into the Thames Estuary it's still good sailing
there is some shipping, so the main channel is dredged and well buoyed
many quiet anchorages are to be found, exploring the creeks, where the only sounds are the birds
(sometimes big ships in the docks make some noises, and jetskis have been known)
a mixture of -
wide sailing water
big ship docks
remnants of The Royal Navy
distant views
empty wildness
ancient remains
tiny local comforts
leading to -
The Medway River - still tidal to Allington and navigable if you pass under Rochester Bridge;
The Medway Navigation from Allington Lock to beyond Tonbridge;
and of course The Swale
