CHATHAM MARITIME LOCK ENTRANCE
RENEWAL OF SCOUR PROTECTION
DIVING OPERATIONSNOTICE IS HEREBY given that on or about Monday 10th March 2008, work will commence on the renewal of the scour protection at the entrance to Chatham Maritime Lock, Chatham Reach, River Medway in the following approximate position:
51º 24.289' N 00º 31.913' E
2. The work involves the removal of the existing gabion mattress and the installation of a new gabion mattress. Following an initial divers' inspection the existing gabions will be removed by excavator mounted on the multi-cat 'ABWOOD VIII' which will be held in position by spud legs. The materials will be placed onto a storage pontoon. At high water periods the storage pontoon will be moved to a position on the nearby river wall and the materials will be off-loaded into a storage area. Diving inspections of the area will take place as and when necessary. The new gabion baskets will be constructed ashore and loaded onto the pontoon for delivery to site and placement by the excavator.
3. During the times of diving operations the 'Abwood VIII' will display an International Code Flag 'A'. In addition, in accordance with Medway Ports' Byelaw No. 11.(1), a red flag will be exhibited on the 'Abwood VIII' as close as possible to the point of entry into the water. A safety boat will be in attendance. Persons in charge of vessels navigating in the vicinity of the works should pass by at reduced speed and exercise due care and caution.

ROCHESTER RAIL BRIDGE - SCAFFOLDING
LONG TERM REPAIR WORKS
CLOSURE TO NAVIGATIONNOTICE IS HEREBY given that on or about Monday 29th February 2008, work will commence on the erection of scaffolding in the MAIN SPAN of the Rail Bridge, Bridge Reach, River Medway in the following approximate position:
51º 23.545' N 00º 30.071' E
2. The work involves the installation of scaffolding suspended no more than 1.6 metres beneath the bridge. The replacement and painting of steelwork of the Main span will take approximately 8 months. Materials will be delivered and collected by lighter. The safety boat 'Boy Daniel' will be in attendance. Consequently, the Main span will be CLOSED TO NAVIGATION for the period of this work. All of the scaffolding has been removed from the STROOD SPAN which will now be the DESIGNATED SPAN FOR NAVIGATION.
3. The appropriate day and night signals will be displayed in accordance with Medway Ports' River Byelaw 1991 9(1) which states: When the arch or span of a bridge is closed to navigation the person in control of the bridge shall suspend from the centre of that arch or span:
(a) by day, three RED discs 0.6 metres in diameter at the points of an equilateral triangle of length of side 1.8 metres with the apex downwards and the base horizontal;
(b) by night three RED lights in similar positions to the discs exhibited by day.

BEE NESS JETTY - PIPELINE REMOVAL
FOUL AREA DECLARATIONNOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that following the removal of a section of pipeline and associated walkway being part of Bee Ness Jetty, Kethole Reach, River Medway, a Foul Area has been designated.
2. The pipeline and walkway have been removed following a gradual deterioration of the structure. The support trestles have been left in position and may be covered at high water periods. The Foul Area extends some 350 metres from the rear of the jetty head, centred on a line joining the following two approximate positions:
51° 25.3073' N 00° 38.8920' E and 51° 25.4255' N 00° 38.6561' E
The Foul Area extends 25 metres each side of this line.
3. Persons in charge of craft navigating in the vicinity of Bee Ness Jetty should not attempt to traverse the Foul Area, between the support trestles.

AMENDMENT OF EXCLUSION ZONE BOUNDARYNOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that with immediate effect in order to accommodate changes in the safe working requirements of the craft involved in the demolition of Jetty No. 8 on the North shore of Saltpan Reach, River Medway, the boundary of the exclusion zone has been amended and the position of the yellow marker buoy has been changed.

VESSELS TO BE NAVIGATED WITH CARE AND CAUTIONNOTICE IS HEREBY given that persons in charge of vessels navigating within the Port are reminded of the contents of Byelaw No. 22, in particular Part (1) of this Byelaw:
'No person shall navigate a vessel without care and caution, or at a speed or in a manner which, having regard to all the circumstances at the time, including weather conditions and the type, condition and use of other vessels underway, berthed or moored, or which might be reasonably expected to be underway, berthed or moored, endangers the safety of, or causes injury or damage to any person, any other vessel, buoy, moorings, banks of the Port or the Medway approach area or any other property'.
2. This reminder is issued especially with regard to the wash created by vessels and its effect on moored vessels when passing by.

The replacement and painting of steelwork of the inshore Strood and Rochester spans will take approximately 4 months. Materials will be delivered and collected by lighter. The safety boat 'Boy Daniel' will be in attendance. Consequently, the inshore Strood and Rochester spans will be CLOSED TO NAVIGATION for the period of this work.
