GENERAL NOTES ON THE CLUB The Unicorn Folk Club welcomes members and non-members. Members enjoy the advantage of concessionary admission. Please contact us for details on joining as a member. The Club is run on a non profit-making basis, organised by a committee. The door fee is used to cover the cost of guest singers and to assist with the folk club running costs. The Club is open on Friday nights for most of the year, however, we do take Christmas and Easter off and a couple of weeks during late August to attend local Folk festivals. We generally alternate between Singers Nights and Guest Nights on a 2 weekly basis. The aims of the Club are to provide an encouraging platform for new artistes to start their careers as well as providing a forum for members to enjoy entertainment on Singers Nights and Guest Nights. The Club is varied in its outlook, providing a forum for a wide range of music from traditional, contemporary, Irish Folk to Blues and Ragtime. We have helped local entertainers to become established, assisting with providing confidence with presentation and delivery of their material. It gives us great pleasure when they occasionally return to their roots to help encourage other budding artistes. Singers Nights: It is easier for us to organise the singers night if we can be advised in advance to create a running order of time slots. Hence, please can singers advise Vicky early on the night so that slots can be allocated fairly, taking account of the number of singers and the time available. The usual format of the evening is that the resident band start the proceedings from 8:45 pm for the about first half hour. On a Singers Night, the remaining time is then used for floor singers, with a break at around 10.15 pm for the raffle. On a Guest Night, the guests usually perform two 45 minute spots, again with a break at around 10.15 pm for the raffle and a "middle spot". We aim to finish at around 11:30 pm. At the end of the evening, we ask our members and guests to return their glasses back to the bar and to leave quietly, out of consideration for the local neighbourhood. The Club provides a PA which is used for balancing vocals and instruments. The aim of the Club is for everyone to enjoy the evening.
