Verulam Wine Tasting Club, based in St Albans, Hertfordshire meets regularly to taste wines in a convivial and relaxed atmosphere. We warmly welcome new members. The club came into existence in autumn 1978 and currently has over eighty members. We meet nine times a year, always on a Saturday evening in a St. Albans school. Additionally we run a very light-hearted annual blind tasting competition for a dented silver cup bought for a fiver in a car-boot sale, and a summer barbecue. The December meeting is always somewhat festive with wines interspersed by entertainment – such as madrigal singers or a barbershop group. Meetings are characterised by - amongst other things – friendliness and informality. Our presenters are experts in their field and are chosen not simply for their knowledge but because they also entertaining speakers. We invite speakers on advice from relevant embassies, and also from The Wine Society, from The Wine and Spirit Education Trust, from the Heart of England School of Wine, and from the wine trade. We normally taste four white wines and four red, but occasionally the whites or the reds will predominate, and – sometimes – we may taste more than eight wines. Meeting topics in previous years included: Canadian wines, Australia – standards and flagships, Chilean wines, Champagne and chocolate, ‘Rhône wines, Modern versus traditional wines and Wines of today’s South Africa. Our schedule of future tastings is listed here. The Club is independent and non-profitmaking and is managed by a revolving committee of members. Club membership is £14.00, and the charge per tasting varies according to the cost of the wines, but is normally about £14 for members and £18 for guests. New members are very welcome.
