limbing the stairs led to the discovery of a wide corridor, which hugged the the ground floor’s perimeter. From the walls, torches of soft, ambient light lent to dispel some of the creeping shadows and relax the eyes. The crashing of the storm outside was barely audible through the walls, and the guttering torches made bright the pale columns lining the corridor. It gave the impression that if the castle were a living thing, this particular area would be the rib cage of a colossus.

These were no bare bones, however, for great care had been taken to detailing the hallway. No expense or energy had been spared in the undertaking. Ornate candelabras and a plush carpet, probably hand-picked, and attesting to the elaborate tastes, yet sentimental nature of those within for the beauty of ages past and present. The walls were adorned with beautifully rendered portraits, each depicting uncanny likenesses to those who resided here; souls frozen in perfection.

A shadow moved, somewhere ahead. A woman was silhouetted, appearing to studiously regard a painting. She stepped forward, aware that she was no longer alone, and an attractive face, with sparkling emerald eyes and framed by raven locks, smiled in polite greeting.
“Please, be welcome. I am Mistral. It meant not to startle you. I am just returning the Book of the House Of Steel.” Reverentially, Mistral returned a massive, leather-bound book to its claw-footed lectern. Her hand passed lightly over the intricate designs of the cover, almost in affection.

“Scribed within these pages are the lives of those you see before you... those who reside within these walls, whether it be in the flesh or in spirit alone. All carefully compiled and recorded. Heed you well what you read, and take great pains in how you treat this gift of knowledge.”

With that, the solemn figure retreated from sight, leaving only a gentle whisper behind her. “Darkest blessings.”
