This research is being carried out by Ian Smythe and John Everatt of the University of Surrey, Guildford, UK.

Theoretical background

The original dyslexia checklist dates back to the mid-1980's, when Jo Matty and Harry Chasty devised a checklist for the British Dyslexia Association based on experience. This was subsequently modified for research purposes by Michael Vinegrad, who tested a large number of individuals in a higher education institution. His results were published in Educare, No 48, March 1994.

The current checklist has taken the earlier version, expanding the number of questions, and put them into a theoretical framework. This work is still at the research level, but it is hoped that, given enough data, a valid, reliable checklist will be provided which will help pinpoint not only areas of difficulty, but also suggest preferred learning styles.

The theoretical framework is that dyslexia may be caused by a combination of phonological segmentation and assembly skills, and visual and auditory system deficits. Word retrieval and speed of processing difficulties may also be present. A number of possible underlying biological causes of these cognitive deficits have been identified, and it is probable that in any one individual there may be several causes.
