Dyslexia: A Practitioners Handbook

by Gavin Reid. 1998. Wiley. £15.99

This is an excellent book aimed at practitioner and specialist teachers. I was particularly impressed by the good coverage to the theoretical issues behind assessment. The resources pages, which ran to 50 pages of detailed information about many products, books, tests and teaching programmes will be a valuable addition to my library. I would assume that it will become recommended reading on most dyslexia courses.

How To Detect and Manage and Dyslexia

by Philomena Ott. 1997. Heinemann. £14.99

There is no doubt that Philomena must have talked to just about everyone in the world of dyslexia to put this wonderful book together. Its accessibility makes it useful for both teachers and parents, and in a form that allows you to dip into areas of particular interest when you need them most. Barrington Stoke (see advert on page 245) This exquisite range of books for reluctant readers attempts to provide age-appropriate reading material to those who may be having difficulty reading. Patience Thomson set herself a difficult task to provide such a resource, but I think she has, with the help of some of the best authors of childrensı books in this country, succeeded in producing a great product.

Dyslexia - a hundred years on

by T R Miles and E Miles Second Edition, 1999, OUP, £15.99

There could hardly be better writers of a book that looks to review where we have come in the past 100 years than Tim and Elaine Miles, who have been for so long a mainstay of dyslexia in this country. This is an excellent review of many of the key aspects in dyslexia, and every professional dealing with the dyslexic individual should read it.

Teaching Today - Dyslexia in the Primary School

Price £29.99 (BBC Educational Developments, PO Box 50, Wetherby, West Yorkshire LS23 7AZ. Enquiries: 020 8746 1111)

This is an excellent video for parents and teachers. It introduces the subject with poignant drama which, whilst slightly overdramatic, is effective in focusing on the issues. The accompanying book is a succinct and useful guide.
