In the panel to the side is a list of colours. As you move the mouse cursor over these colours, so the background colour of this page changes. Some people prefer different combinations. It is often said that light yellow is the preferred colour of dyslexic individuals, but some studies have suggested that this may be true of only 40% of the population, and certainly the diversity of preferences is too much to suggest that just one colour should be used across the site. However you can set the colours in your own browser to suit you, and below are instruction that should work for your browser.

Please note that if you have already overwritten the background colours in your browser, this side bar will still work in Netscape but not in Explorer.

Click here to return to main site.

Changing colours in Netscape

Go to Edit, Preference, Appearance, Colours in your menus. There you should see a part that says "Sometimes a page will provide its own background and colours." Tick the box beneath that which says "Always use my colors, overriding page". Then click on the box against the word "Background" and set the colour you prefer. You may also wish to change the text colours. Please note that this will work in many sites, but not all, and may make some unreadable. Just experiment, as you can always re-set the colours.

Changing colours in Explorer

Go to Edit, Preference, Web browser, Browser Display in your menus. In the section that says "Page & Links" click on the word "Background" and set the colour you prefer. You will then need to go to Edit, Preference, Web browser, Web Content, and uncheck the box marked "Allow page to specify colors". You may also wish to change the text colours. Please note that this will work in many sites, but not all, and may make some unreadable. Just experiment, as you can always re-set the colours.
