Interview with Mrs Scott from
Stockbridge Lane, Huyton.
Mrs Scott
I lived in Princess Drive from 1937 and then moved to Stockbridge Lane in 1972. All this area used to be fields used by farmers then, and was owned by Lord Sefton.
Cantril farm was not built then and came after the end of World War Two.

When we were children there used to be a woods at the corner of Knowsley Lane and Stockbridge Lane where we used to play, we also used to play around the River Alt a lot it as it was clean back then.

There was a building we called the Castle Gates and it was at the end of Stockbridge Lane, they took them down when they were building the new M57 motorway, they were really nice.

Before the school was built this area was just all grass, there used to be a few sheep and cows there, we would come home from school, get changed and go onto the fields to play, that's where I met my husband.

Many local children including my own son used to play football on the fields. We used to have wheat fields around here as well, we always used to watch the farmers reaping the harvest and we would watch them from the side and then go over to see what was in the middle, there always used to be quite a variety of animals and insects in the fields.

The Queen has been down Stockbridge Lane when it was just a lane and not with a road going right through the middle of it. She always came in through the Castle gates which was the main entrance then to Lord Derbys estate, I can also remember the Bow and Arrow Pub, with just a road going all the way to it.

This interview was recorded for the video-"A Village Green for Parkway", 1997.

Nb: We believe Mrs Scott passed away a few years ago.
