History and Timeline.

I'm compiling a brief history of Stockbridge Lane and the Hillside Estate area with the aid of
local residents
and family and friends. Please email me if you have any information about the
Stockbridge Lane - Hillside Estate area.

1837 Knowsley Grand Lodge built - known locally as "The Castle Gates" and designed by William Burn.
 
1913 King George V and Queen Mary visit Knowsley Hall.
 
1938 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth visit Knowsley Hall.
 
Pre 1940 Hillside Estate built with Stockbridge Lane mostly farmland.
 
1940 The American Army take control of Hillside Housing estate to house it's servicemen during the 2nd World War.
 
1950 Princess Margaret visits Knowsley Hall.
 
1954 Queen Elizabeth II visits Knowsley Hall.
 
1956 Woolfall Secondary Modern School opens.- (renamed Parkway Comprehensive later on).
 
Cantril Farm Built. - Later known as Stockbridge Village.
 
1972 The "Grand Lodge" (The Castle Gates") of Knowsley Estate is demolished. - some stones are deposited along Pyes Lane.
 
1972 M57 motorway built crossing part of the Knowsley Park Estate.
 
Woolfall School renamed Parkway Comprehensive School.
 
1994 Parkway Fields were planted with Wildflowers.
(Consisting of native Cornflower, Poppy, Corn Marigold, Oxeye Daises and Lupins.)

1997 Events held on Parkway Wildflower Fields by local residents.
Residents ask for the fields to become a Village Green.

1998 Parkway Fields become a Rivermead Housing estate.

2000 Photographs taken of Hillside Estate - rumours of re-development.

2005 Areas of Hillside Estate pulled down. with some re-sold and developed for housing.

Knowsley Hall was often on the itinerary of Royal visitors and the celebrations would often include the tenants and estate workers of Knowsley Park who would be entertained in large marquees set up within the grounds close to the Hall.
