The Club
Formation: The Westbury Cycle Club was formed in November 2003.
Purpose: The idea of the Club is to foster leisure/fitness road cycling in the area. All adults welcome. The Club will have no connection with any competitive events.
Purpose of website: To enable any cyclist to enjoy a ride with the minimum risk of getting lost or running out of time. Use of the Message Board/Forum at Bike Radar (click on "Ride" and search for "West Wilts") is to be encouraged for the purpose of arranging group rides.
Constitution: There are no headquarters, no commitee, no fee, no discounts and no membership card. The club may be disbanded at any time without notice. A jersey may be produced if 30 members are willing to pay up front.
Conduct: Any group cycling on the open road to act in a proper manner, and proceed at the speed of the slowest in the group. Any rider not complying will be asked to leave.

Some routes are arranged for an anti-clockwise direction, as this minimises the need for right-hand turns.
I have avoided the inclusion of any possible hazards that may be encounted on the rides, such as; narrow sections, 1inch. cracks in the surface, grit on the apex, known potholes, manhole covers on the corner, etc. as these are all covered by "common sense".
Route 1 (22.5ml.)
Summary: 22.5ml. circuit of the villages around Keevil airfield. Takes about 1hr. 20mins. at an average of 16.8mph. Starts and finishes at Westbury Market Place, going via Park Lane/Capps Lane, Housecroft Farm and Ivy Mill to Tinhead, B3098, Coulston, Marston, Worton, Bulkington, Keevil, Steeple Ashton, Housecroft Farm, Crossroads Farm and back to Capps Lane and the Market Place.
Full Directions:
Starting from the Market Place go along A350 Trowbridge Road, and at the far end of the first lay-by turn R into Park Lane, which then becomes Capps Lane. At T-junc turn L to Crossroads Farm. At crossroads go S. Turn R* after Housecroft Farm, pass Ivy Mill, over railway, turn next L to Tinhead. Join B3098 turning L. Turn L to Coulston. At Marston join the Worton road turning L. Go past the Poulshot road and turn next L to, and go through, Bulkington and Keevil. At top of hill out of Keevil at Hinton x-roads turn L into Hinton Lane. Join Steeple Ashton road turning L, and go through Steeple Ashton. Just after Raydown House on your left turn R, passing Housecroft Farm. S at x-roads (Crossroads Farm) then turn R into Capps Lane. Turn L onto A350 and back to the Market Place. Note. * = 14mls till you next arrive at this junc.
Route 2 (33.2ml.)
Note. Routes 2 + 3 + 4 = 100.7 miles.
Summary: A longer 33.2ml. circuit of the villages around Keevil airfield. Takes about 2hrs. 10mins. at an average of 15.2mph. Starts and finishes at Westbury Market Place, going via Park Lane/Capps Lane, Housecroft Farm and Ivy Mill to Tinhead, B3098, Coulston, Newtown Farm and Lower Road to Erlstoke, B3098, Great Cheverll, Heath Bridge, Potterne, Caen Hill, Poulshot, Bulkington, Keevil, Steeple Ashton, East Town, West Ashton, Dunge Farm, Crossroads Farm, and back to Capps Lane and the Market Place.
Full Directions:
Starting from the Market Place go along Trowbridge Road, and at the far end of the first lay-by turn R into Park Lane, which then becomes Capps Lane. At t-junc turn L to Crossroads Farm. At crossroads go S. Turn R after Housecroft Farm, pass Ivy Mill, over railway, turn next L to Tinhead. Join B3098 turning L. Turn L to Coulston and mid-way along the straight at the x-roads turn R. At Erlestoke join B3098 turning left. After prison turn L to Great Chevrell. After the Pub, when you see the warning chevrons turn sharp L into The Green. Join the Worton-Lavington road turning L. Just on entering Worton turn sharp R to Potterne. Join the A360 turning L. Take the 2nd. L where the roads bears out-of-sight to the right, into Whistley Road. At Caen Hill turn L, then L again to Poulshot. Go through Poulshot, stopping at the seat on the green (mind the dog mess), then at the x-roads turn R. Turn next L to, and go through, Bulkington and Keevil. At top of hill out of Keevil at Hinton x-roads turn L into Hinton Lane. Join Steeple Ashton road turning L. Take 2nd. R Sandpits Lane to East Town, and after East Town proper stay to the right to join the West Ashton road by Manor Farm (opposite the bus shelter). Turn L, passing Dunge Farm, and turning R at Crossroads Farm, then R into Capps Lane. Turn L onto A350 and back to the Market Place.
Route 3 (27.5ml.)
Note. Routes 1 + 3 = 50 miles.
Summary: 27.5ml. circuit. Takes about 1hr. 53mins. at an average of 14.5mph. Starts and finishes at Westbury Market Place, going via A350 to Warminster, Sutton Veny, Longbridge Deverill, Maiden Bradley, West Woodlands, Blatchbridge, Frome by-pass, Berkley, Standerwick, Dilton Marsh, Westbury Leigh, and back to the Market Place.
Full Directions:
Starting from the Market Place go along West End and up Haynes Rd, then R onto the A350 Warminster Rd. Go out through Chalford and Upton Scudamore then turn L at the traffic lights onto the old Warminster Rd. On passing the 30 speed limit signs take the second L into Copheap Lane, SP All Military Units. At MR go S. At Imber Road turn R, then immeadiately left into Woodcock Road, SP Woodcock Ind. Est. At MR on the Boreham Road (SP L to Salisbury/R to Warminster) go S into Bishopstrow Road (SP Bishopstrow+Sutton Veny). In Sutton Veny turn 2nd. R (SP The Deverills+Maiden Bradley). At Longbridge Deverill by the BP petrol station, cross S over the A350 into road (SP Maiden Bradley). At Maiden Bradley at the STOP sign at the crossroads turn R (SP Longleat+Frome). Pass through West Woodlands and at Blatchbridge roundabout on the Frome by-pass take the 3rd. exit onto the by-pass. While on the by-pass the white line denotes the edge of the carriageway. At the next roundabout take the 2nd. exit and at the T-junction turn L and go through Berkley. At the A36 at Standerwick (the Bell Inn facing) turn R, and go under the railway bridge and turn L to Dilton Marsh. Go straight through Dilton Marsh and at the MR go L, then at the roundabout take the 2nd. exit, and at the next roundabout, again take the 2nd. exit. At the MR turn L and go through Westbury Leigh and at the MR go S and on into Leigh Road. At the junction with the A350 Warminster Road turn L and so back to the Market Place.
Route 4 (40ml.)
Summary: 40ml. circuit. Takes about 3hr. 4mins. at an average of 13mph. Starts and finishes at Westbury Market Place, going via Westbury Leigh, Dilton Marsh, Standerwick, Berkley, Frome, Lower Marston, Gare Hill, Maiden Bradley, Horningsham, Crockerton, Picket Post Gate, Lane End, Frome, Berkley, Standerwick, Dilton Marsh, Westbury Leigh, and back to the Market Place.
Full Directions:
Starting from the Market Place go along West End and up Haynes Rd, then R onto the A350 Warminster Rd. At MR go S, then take next R (SP Frome). At the MR go S, and go through Westbury Leigh, and turn R at roundabout, then 1st. exit at the next, 2nd. exit at the next, then at MR take 2nd. exit and go through Dilton Marsh. At T-junc. turn R, go under railway bridge and turn L, by the Bell Inn, to Berkley. Go through Berkley and at the T-junc. turn R (SP B3098 Frome). Go down Styles Hill and at the T-junc. turn R. Pass the petrol station and at the traffic lights turn L (SP Glastonbury). At the next traffic lights at top of hill at Keyford turn L. Just after passing the traffic bollards by the SPAR shop, turn R. into Mount Pleasant. Stay straight on this lane until you meet the Frome by-pass, where you cross straight over into a gated lane. After the 2nd. gate - Tytherington - turn L. Turn 1st. R (SP Trudoxhill) and carry on to the crossroads, where turn L. Shortly join the main road turning L, and go up Gare Hill, then at the Give-way line turn L. Follow this lane along and at the next junc. keep L, and go to Maiden Bradley. At Maiden Bradley turn L, and descend until the road levels out, then, just after the stone bridge near the rendered cottage, turn R. The bridge marks the county boundary and if you pass the "Somerset" sign then you`ve just passed the turning. Follow this lane up to Horningsham. Pass the school and the churchyard, ignore turning to the left to Warminster and Salisbury, and turn L at T-junc. Shortly turn L (fork L) to Shearwater and Crockerton. Pass Shearwater and at Crockerton T-junc. turn L, then 2nd. L (SP Potters Hill), and go up the hill, ignoring L & R turnings. At the T-junc turn R to Picket Post Gate roundabout. At Picket Post Gate roundabout take the A362 (SP Frome). Shortly take the 3rd. (the 2nd. is No Entry, the 3rd. is soon after) L turn into narrow Sturford Lane, and follow this lane along, then turn R at the Give-way line, and join the A362 again at Lane End. Turn L towards Frome. At the next junction turn R towards Frome. Pass under the Railway bridge and turn next R up Styles Hill (SP Westbury). Pass over the (flat) railway and by-pass bridges and turn next L to Berkley. At the A36 at Standerwick (the Bell Inn facing) turn R, and go under the railway bridge and turn L to Dilton Marsh. Go straight through Dilton Marsh and at the MR go L, then at the roundabout take the 2nd. exit, and at the next roundabout, again take the 2nd. exit. At the MR turn L and go through Westbury Leigh and at the MR go S and on into Leigh Road. At the junction with the A350 Warminster Road turn L and back to the Market Place.
Route 5 (51ml.)
Summary: 51ml. circuit. Takes about 3hr. 37mins. at an average of 14mph. Starts and finishes at Westbury Market Place, going via Park Lane/Capps Lane, Housecroft Farm and Ivy Mill to Tinhead, B3098, Andover Road, Woodborough garden centre cafe, Wilcot, Alton Barnes, Horton, Coate, Roundway, Rowde, Poulshot, Bulkington, Keevil, Steeple Ashton, Housecroft Farm, Crossroads Farm and back to Capps Lane and the Market Place.
Full Directions:
Starting from the Market Place go along Trowbridge Road, and at the far end of the first lay-by turn R into Park Lane, which then becomes Capps Lane. At t-junc turn L to Crossroads Farm. At crossroads go S. Turn R after Housecroft Farm, pass Ivy Mill, over railway, turn next L to Tinhead. Join B3098 turning L. Follow this road to West Lavington, and cross over to Market Lavington, then carry straight on through the villages until the main Andover road. Here turn R. and carry on for nearly 3mls., turning L. after the farm with conifers, but before the line of pylons. You now enter a series of Quiet Lanes, follow R. at 2 juncs. and at Hilcott x-roads take the main L. turn to "Woodborough", then shortly after the red phone box, R. to "Bottlesford". At the railway bridge go over then immd. R. to the garden centre in 100yds. where others meet mostly on a Sunday. Then go on further round the double bend and then left at the x-roads, then shortly fork up L to Wilcot, joining the main road L. At Alton Barnes go S, and on to Allington. Go through Horton and at Horton Bridge (just before canal and pub) turn L to Little Horton and Coate, where turn sharp R. Next turn R to the Rabt where go L, then 100yds turn R to "Roundway", go up lane, watchout for the steep drop as it is rough (10mph), and come out on the Rowde road. Turn R, then L before the pub and arrive at bottom of Caen Hill, cross over then L to Poulshot. Go through Poulshot, stopping at the seat on the green (mind the dog mess), then at the x-roads turn R. Turn next L to, and go through, Bulkington and Keevil. At top of hill out of Keevil at Hinton x-roads turn L into Hinton Lane. Join Steeple Ashton road turning L, and go through Steeple Ashton. Just after Raydown House on your left turn R, passing Housecroft Farm. S at x-roads (Crossroads Farm) then turn R into Capps Lane. Turn L onto A350 and back to the Market Place.
