Firstly you will notice that I have chosen
colours for this web site
that are close to the colours of EWS locos, the border is similar
to the loco body colours, and the background is similar to "loco
cab green".
This Web site is divided into two sections:-
Photographs pre EWS = Train Drivers (Page 1)
Photographs post EWS = Page 2 | Page 3

Picture 1
By way of an introduction
here is a picture from the archives, it shows the Whatley
to Fareham stone train passing the Down Starting signal gantry at
Westbury North, taken from the cab of the assisting (banking) loco
- a class 47, sometime in the late 1970's.
The picture shows the train of Tippler wagons passing under the
road bridge that connects the town to the Trading Estate.
Westury North Signal Box can be seen near the centre, and a
CovHop wagon discharging grain can just be seen on the left.
Picture 2
This 1984 picture shows a class 56 at Theale, it is standing
outside the ESSO Oil Depot, having hauled its train of tank wagons
from South Wales. It was crewed by Westbury men from Hawkeridge (near
Westbury) to Theale via Newbury, and it will return with the empties
by the same route.
This picture was taken before the Depot was extended and a tank wagon
needing repair can be seen in the background. Foster Yeoman's fence
can be seen to the left of the picture.
Picture 3
This picture, also taken in 1984 shows a class 58
stabled towards the rear of Reading Diesel Depot. It is being used for
training the Maintainance and Repair staff, so that when a class 58
needs sevicing or repair then they will be qualified to carry out the
necessary work.
Picture 4
On 28th. June 1986 at Merehead Quarry, Foster Yeoman's class 59's
were officially launched into service, and at the same time all four
locos were named:- 59001 Yeoman Endeavour, 59002 Yeoman Enterprise,
59003 Yeoman Highlander, and 59004 Yeoman Challenger.This
picture shows Mr. and Mrs. Yeoman shortly after the naming
ceremony admiring the bell that was presented to them by
representitives of General Motors.
Picture 5
This picture, believed to have been taken on 25th. June 1989 shows a
class 59 on the wheel-drop pit at Merehead Depot, with some wagon
wheel-sets in the foreground. This would have been the occasion when
59005, recently introduced into service, was officially named Kenneth
J Painter.
Note. More namings have taken place, and this was in 1996
when 59002 was renamed Alan J Day, and 59004 was renamed Paul A Hammond.
