Westbury EWS Drivers
and their Workplace - a Snapshot.
Firstly you will notice that I have chosen colours for this web site
that are close to the colours of EWS locos, the border is similar
to the loco body colours, and the background is similar to "loco cab green".

This Web site is divided into two sections:-
Photographs pre EWS = Train Drivers (page 1)
Photographs post EWS = Page 2 | Page 3

Picture 15
08 in Down Yard
Here we see 08644 on a frosty morning in the spring of 2000, standing in the Stone Sidings (also known as the New Sidings) at Westbury Down Yard. This loco has been our regular shunting loco for some time and it is used within the whole of the Terminal Complex at Westbury as well as travelling at 15mph. to Merehead for fueling; minor repairs being carried out at Westbury by Fitters from Eastleigh.

Picture 16
60 in Down Yard
This shows 60010 in the Down Yard at Westbury about to depart with a train of Yeoman 102 tonne stone hoppers. We don't normally have class 60's at Westbury, but when Mendip Rail Limited (the rail transport arm of Foster Yeoman and Hanson) are short of locos these 60's are drafted in to work some of their lighter trains.

Picture 17
59 on Whatley branch
This picture shows Yeoman owned 59004 awaiting clearance of signal W422 on the enterance to Whatley Quarry. This location is at the end of a charming branch line that starts at Frome North Junction, and as can be seen from the picture it is overshadowed by trees, although, suprisingly, we don't suffer from "leaves on the rails". This area is so wet all the year round that small ferns grow on the branches of the oak trees.

Picture 18
66 in Down Yard
Picture 18 shows one of the now numerous class 66 locos (66092) in Westbury Down Yard about to depart with a train of "Big Boxes", as they are known locally, for Hamworthy in Dorset. Although these wagons are rated for 60mph. little advantage is gained on part of this route as there is a blanket restriction of 50 or 55mph. in effect whilst working freight trains over the ex. Southern Region.

Picture 19
59002 at Appleford
This picture, taken in 2000 shows 59002 having its train discharged at Appleford Sidings near Didcot. This train would have worked up the Berks and Hants line to Reading, then down the Great Western main line to Didcot. The return trip will be down the Great Western main line again to Thingley Junction (near Chippenham), then over the Melksham branch (currently at 30mph.) and so back to Westbury. The loco 59002 is still sporting the original Foster Yeoman paint scheme.

Picture 20
66181 at Merehead
This picture, taken in 2000 shows 66181 at the Stop Board to Merehead Quarry. This loco has just come light engine from Westbury to pick up its train. The ingoing sidings here can become congested at times and this can result in some time being spent waiting for acceptance from the Shunter; ideal for yet another good shot!
