Westbury Web Site Information Page.
The Web Site. This Web site is produced as a hobby, and it is designed to be of some small benefit to the town.
The idea to produce a Web site came about some time after I read an article in a PC magazine about free ISP's, which explained that it was possible to connect to the Internet without paying a monthly charge. That was followed by the purchase of a modem and NetConnect2 internet software from Active Technologies, so I installed a phone cable extension lead, rang the free ISP that was recommended in the magazine article, Freenet, and was soon on-line.
Once on-line I was able to see that Westbury did not have a Web site that was indexed by the main Search Engines, and at about this time Neil Bothwick's "UsingHTML" articles started appearing in Amiga Format magazine, so I started to make a simple Web site for the town, then I uploaded it, and wrote to the Town Council to let them know, but they did not bother to reply, although I did get a phone call from someone who was producing a Web site that was more advanced than mine!
Next step was to have a look at this rival web site, and I had to admit he had done a lot more work, gathering content and such, so I decided on a slimmed down site that still said something to the benefit of the town, and that was also quick to load and easy to use. What's more my site is free-of-charge to the town.
While building the Web site I was pleased with another purchase I made, and that was a book called HTML 4 For The World Wide Web by Elizabeth Castro priced at $17.95, ISBN 0-201-69696-7, it has all the tags clearly laid out accompanied by sceengrabs throughout, it has compatibility and colour charts, and I would suggest you have a look at it, if you haven't already got such a book.
My AMIGA 1200 computer
Next, a little about the Amiga 1200 computer that I use to produce the Web site you are looking at now.
It was made in 1995 and it has been upgraded quite a bit, and using some of the internet software as above, plus programs that I already had installed I am able to type up the text in a text editor, draw the graphics in Personal Paint v.7.1 (coverdisk), converting them with Image Studio 2.3 (coverdisk), enter the HTML code in the text editor - WordPad (e-mailware), just as I am doing now, then checking it displays OK in Voyager, a fast browser (shareware), and uploading it to my ISP using AmFTP, which is a program that forms part of the Internet software that I use. I have since moved the web site to UKOnline and it is now accessed via the domain name of "westburywilts.co.uk", which was supplied by Firevision, who also set-up the redirection needed.
