CLUB HISTORY

Following the election in 1993 of Ross County and Inverness Caledonian Thistle (merger of Caley & Thistle) to the Scottish Football League, Wick Academy finally got the chance to compete in the Highland League.

This was certainly not the beginning of the club's story but just the start of a new chapter.

Wick academy were founded in October 1893 and have been a member of the Scottish Football Association for over 90 years and first played in the Scottish Qualifying cup in 1911 with a 4-0 win over Inverness Thistle. With their annual entry in that competition Wick had played the majority of the other Highland teams prior to entry to the league.

The Thirties were a successful era for the club qualifying for the Scottish cup in 1933 and 1935 the only times that feat has been achieved.

Aberdeen,Celtic,Hearts and Hibs are among many senior teams that have visited the Harmsworth Park over the years.

The club have been highly successful in Caithness County football and from 1972 more success arrived whilst competing in the North Caledonian league winning that championship on six occasions.

Arguably Wick's best victory was off the field over Junior sides Inverurie Locos and the now defunct Bon-Accord to gain access to the Highland League.

Following that first Highland league game ,a visit by Cove Rangers in August 1994 a game watched by over 2000 people not surprisingly there have been lots of ups and probably more downs but hopefully with good facilities ,sound finances the clubs local youth policy will start to show dividends and our League position will improve!!

Anyone who can add to this history or correct any of the details please E-mail me.

It is my intention to review important years in Academy's history starting with 1984
