< Day 4

Day 5 - Wednesday 29th March 2000

Day 6 >
7.30, yes, yes, yes, made it to breakfast, unfortunately on my own as Claire just couldn't drag herself from her pit. She didn't miss much, fresh bread rolls, foccacia, ham, fruit and the strongest coffee, wish I'd stayed in bed. Brought a bread roll back for the monster in the pit. We left Bilbao in the early hours of the morning and when the sun had risen we could see the snow capped mountains of northern spain. Spent the morning learning and practicing Spanish and did a little exercise but this didn't mix with the ship's movements at all well, consequently I felt pretty green at lunch. After lunch we had a couple of games of table-tennis and table-football, and chatted to the captain about the chart, GPS, radar and his responsibilities. An Italian captain can only marry two people if one of them is about to die, so I don't think we'll be wed before Argentina, at least I hope not. Highlight of the day was seeing a school of dolphins, porpoising(?) towards the ship from the top most deck - a wonderful, uplifting sight.

Whilst waiting for dinner Claire, Nellie and I played dominoes and watched an Italian game show (just like a Fast Show sketch) with the officers who were waiting for the Spain-Italy football game to start. Had dinner and settled to watch the game but the reception from the satellite dish was abismal so we moved to the crews quarters where a terrestial arial had been setup pointing to Spain - the reception was still poor, so I called it a day at half-time. Think I'll have a lie in tomorrow and skip breakfast.
