Welcome to the New World, which conversely appears older than the Old World. Salvador de Bahia, or Bahia as it is called locally appeared around 10.30 this morning and by 1.30 the ship was docked. Bahia is a large city with modern apartment tower-blocks behind the Atlantic beaches and an older quarter with Portugese churches and buildings facing its bay.
We were staying for a couple of hours so by the time the officials had done their paperwork we only had approximately half an hour to stretch our legs. Joseph is a devout Catholic and was determined to go to church, we persuaded him to agree to take us along. We headed off towards the nearest unlocked exit gate where Joseph asked the guards where the nearest church was, unfortunately it was too far to make it there, have the service and get back in time before the ship sailed. So we had to settle for a gentle stroll through the surrounding area, by this time we also had Carlo and Vincenzo with us.
In most cities the docks are not the most salubrious places and Bahia was no exception. The depravation and poverty seemed pretty bad and I was very pleased to have the three crew with us as we walked around. After returning to the ship we watched as the captain, with the pilot's help, navigated the ship out of the harbour and we sailed away from Bahia under another wonderful sunset, with Bahia's twinkling lights disappearing behind us.
