Once in the centre we headed for the nearest bank to get some of the local money, this was made all the more difficult by our complete lack of knowledge regarding Portuguese. Various people tried to help us out until we were ushered into (and out of the way) a senior man's office who gave us directions. Finally after two more banks we found the bureau de change - something tells me Vitoria isn't on the typical tourist's itinerary. After changing some "$"s (they wouldn't take our Spanish pesetas) into "Reals" we left Nellie and Arnold to find a news-stand or post office to get a telephone card to make a couple of calls home. The Post Office people were very helpful and we were soon guided to an english-speaking lady's office where she was able to get a security guard to take us to a cashier and explain what we wanted. After the post office we headed in to the old part of town where there was less traffic, people and noise. Found a small supermarket and brought some water and sticky cakes to eat in the nearby square, where we met Evandro a sales rep (I think) for Vitoriawagen Administradora de Consorcio Ltda. - he gave us his business card. We had a good chat and found out that Evandro doesn't care much for Vitoria, we are the first tourists he's seen in the last two days and there are no internet cafes here. We swapped email addresses and headed off to have a look around. The Cathedral had beautiful stained glass windows and was cool and calm after the heat and bussle outside. We stayed for a while to relax and get away from the midday sun, before heading out and down to the town hall which was on the opposite side of the harbour from our ship. We sat for awhile watching the world go past and then sauntered (the heat was starting to take its toll) off for some lunch. We found a self-service (bad news) restaurant and immediately got ourselves confused over what to do, the cashier spoke excellent english and came to our rescue when it became apparent that we were about to use the dessert bowls for our main course. After lunch we had a wander around the shops and found a working phone in a quiet area to give our homes a quick call just to let them know that we are OK, where we are and to check that everything is OK at home. Then we headed back to the ship to watch the sunset and Vitoria's rush hour.
