< Day 18

Day 19 - Wednesday 12th April 2000

Day 20 >
The ship left Vitoria at 5am so by the time we woke we were well on our way to Rio, the day was fairly uneventful, very warm and humid, we continued south down the coast of Brazil, seeing high peaks in the distance and local fishermen near the ship in their small boats.

At 9pm after dinner we went up on deck to watch the ship come into port in Rio, we opened our bottle of Rioja, bought in Bilbao (we have decided to write a message in the bottle and throw it out to sea before we get to Buenos Aires, the only problem is that the message should be in Spanish if we expect anyone to read it and it could take us days to put together a Spanish sentence!) Heading into Rios bay at night was quite an amazing experience (probably heightened by the strong wine) the mountains surrounding Rio are very high and steep with sheer faces plunging into the sea, the statue of Christ was lit-up but we couldn't see the hill it is upon so it appeared to be suspended (a miracle). Between the mountains and the sea Rio stretched out, lots of twinkling lights and skyscrapers. The pilot boat guided us into port and then Will and I stumbled off to bed.
