< Day 23

Day 24 - Monday 17th April 2000

Day 25 >
After my late night I had a nice long lie in, the weather has turned and the skies are grey and overcast with drizzle. We said our goodbyes with Marco and he left with the shipping agent to catch their flight from Itajai to Sao Paulo. Then the "plank" was raised and we set off for Buenos Aires, the ship got a raucous send off from the pilot and tugs, apparently this is the first time that our ship had called at Itajai and they were worried about getting a ship as large as ours up the river to the port. There were no problems so I guess they'll be heading up this way again in the near future.

The afternoon was the usual - Spanish, table tennis and reading - although we found out from the captain that the itinerary has changed again, we will now call at Zarate (a little way up the Rio Parana from the Rio de la Plata) in Argentina before Buenos Aires. Therefore we will not arrive in BA until Thursday at the earliest, the positive side is that we are getting to see a few places that we probably wouldn't have gone to. The negative side is that we're getting a little fractious and want to get on with it. After dinner we wrote a message in (probably very bad) Spanish to put in our empty Rioja wine bottle together with a postcard of Tewkesbury. We sealed the bottle with a cork and some wax and will try to let it go when we are south of Brazil and closer to the Spanish speaking countries of Uruguay and Argentina.
