< Day 31

Day 32 - Tuesday 25th April 2000

Day 33 >
Got Ripvanwinkle out of bed at 8 a.m. this morning, we're off out of Buenos Aires for a couple of days and wanted an early start. We packed our bags and settled the hotel bill - don't think we'll be back to this establishment for a while - and left to catch the No.5 or 7 bus to the Retiro bus station. You need nerves of steel and a frontal labotomy to drive a bus in this city, it was a miracle that the ride to the center was free of fatalaties. Once off the bus of-death we found the bus station after taking in two train stations, and then we found the bus company and bought two tickets out to San Antonio de Areco on the Chevalier.

The ride out of BA was nice and uneventful, we stopped at a couple of towns en route, before arriving at San Antonio a sleepy little town of one storey buildings and tree lined avenues where you won't have any difficulty finding a parking space. We walked from the bus stop in to town to find the tourist information office, after getting some info on the town and local Estancias (Argentine ranches) we headed for the nearest hotel and checked into what seemed like a palace (compared to the last place). After a quick shower we walked down to the town square and brought some lunch from the local shop and ate in the square, then walked off to the nearest Estancia: La Cina Cina. We approached with some trepedation as everyone owns a dog or two, but needn't have worried as we found (what appeared to be) a woman who told us that La Cina Cina would be open on Thursday - the day we'll be leaving San Antonio. We walked back to the hotel to consider our options and provided another meal for the mozzies.

In the evening we wandered around the almost deserted streets of SA looking for a restaurant with a minimum of 1 other customer with no joy. I guess that once again we're early for the Argentines. Ended up at a nice restaurant near to the hotel which had two old guys eating their evening meal - looks like even older Argentine's get indigestion if they eat too late. I tried the chorizo sausage - v. nice and an empanada, whilst Claire had a delicious omlette. Once back at the hotel we got straight into Channel 16 - CineCanal - the english language movie channel - its sooooo nice to not have to work at understanding what's going on. American Graffiti(?) was on, one of my favourite movies. I guess that's a good omen.
