< Day 47

Day 48 - Thursday 11th May 2000

Day 49 >
Ahhhh, the pain, our muscles have seized, every movement is an effort and incurs a penalty. Its an effort to make it to breakfast where I meet an Israli, American and Australian girl - all travelling independently through South America. Their talk is about the places they've been to and the costs incurred, I listen, eager to grab titbits of info on the places we want to visit. After breakfast we perform our chores: get our dirty laundry washed, visit the post office, check email, get info on the cost and departue time for buses to Santiago (there's a price war on at the moment and the lowest overnight fare is 3,500 Chilean pesos (US$7 ~ UK£14) for the 12 hour journey). There appears to be real traveller cudos in obtaining the lowest fare for the longest journey possible. We would like to visit a national park north of Villerrica and enquire about car rental at the Shell garage = supposedly 1,500 Chilean pesos per hour (US$3/hr).

After the main chores have been completed we buy our food from the local supermarket and prepare our evening meal (Tuna Surprise) in the kitchen with a French couple (Arnold and MiMi, travelling for 6 months through South, Central and North America) and the 3 girls. The 3 girls were preparing their food in readiness for an attempt on the volcano, both the American (++) and the Australian girls are keen to pass on their knowledge of Peru and Bolivia and rave about them both - especially the Salt Flast in Bolivia - can't wait :-))
