< Day 50

Day 51 - Sunday 14th May 2000

Day 52 >
At 7am the bus deposited its weary travellers in a wet and grey Santiago, we said 'au revoir' to the our French friends. Claire called the place - family run - where we wanted to stay to ask if they had a spare room - which they did, so we hoped in to a taxi - too tired to negotiate the metro. Ruben's flat is on the 10th floor above a shopping arcade in a block adjacent to the Cathedral in the Plaza de Armas, we were warmly greeted, shown around his appartement and informed of the other occupants: his mother (currently visiting in Lima, Peru), 3 cats (Philipe, Sabastian and A N Other) and 2 Australian girls. We dumped our things and headed out in to the city to explore. First stop breakfast and then a couple of museums: The History of Santiago and a modern art museum - currently displaying Japanese art, which was a shame as I'd hoped to see some of Chile's modern art.

After the museums we wandered around a damp park and city centre - crammed with people trying to call their mother's - it was Mother's Day in Chile. After attempting and failing to contact our host family in Rancagua we wandered back to the flat with some food for our evening meal. After eating we met the two Australian girls chatted about travelling and exchanged tips, I think we did better out of this than them as we'd only been travelling for a few weeks in S. America, where as they'd been here a few months.
