< Day 54

Day 55 - Thursday 18th May 2000

Day 56 >
Slept in after yesterday's activity and had a lazy breakfast in the eating area outside with Phil, Tiffany, the chickens and Alsatian dog. After filling up on the fresh empanadas from the local bakery we walked 3km through the desert to the ruins of a pre-Inca fortress sited on the side of a hill overlooking San Pedro. We were impressed that the ruins had remained in place for so long and that the walls hadn't crumbled away or the stones been used for other buildings. Sitting at the top of the fortress we had our lunch with volcanos of Los Andes in the distance and seemed to be the only people for miles around.

Returning from our excursion we booked a three day tour into the desert leaving tomorrow - we managed to book the tour in our "sparrow" spanish whilst other "gringos" came in and listened - the pressure was on to speak and understand spanish - all was going well until Claire asked if the tour would leave "manazana" (apple) rather than "manana" (tomorrow) which somewhat confused the tour operator. Whilst in the tour agency we met Nicole, who had made it to San Pedro and hooked up with an Aussie friend: Ben. Having booked the tour we stocked up on the essntials: Bolivanos (currency) and water in preparation for the three days ahead. In the evening we joined Phil + Tiffany for a meal in restaurant beside an open fire.
