The journey from Oaxaca city to San Cristobal was 12 hours along a very windy road through the mountains, so we both had a fitful night's sleep and were pretty knackered when we arrived. We found a cheap hotel near to the bus station and went straight to bed for a couple of hours - rising refreshed at 1pm. OUr first visit was to a restaurant - we hadn't eaten for alomost 24 hours, so with renewed energy we explored the town centre - smaller than Oaxaca, but with a similar main plaza and in the late afternoon we the Na Bolom house (House of the Jaguar) where a Danish couple lived and dedicated their lives to researching, documenting and fighting for the protectiong of local Mayan Indian tribes. Their house has become a working museum to their lives and work where artists, scientists and writers can come and stay and work and volunteers can stay and help with projects to help preserve and improve the tribal environments - it was a great tour with wonderful photographs.
After a few hours of intellectual stimulation we got a couple of beers and sat in a cafe in the centre of the square chatting and watching the San Cristobal world pass by as the day turned into evening, and the evening turned into night. Had a very tasty taco snack and walked along the busy streets back to our hotel.
