< Day 94

Day 95 - Tuesday 27th June 2000

Day 96 >
I'm feeling much better and so we leave our packed bags at the hotel reception and walk the half hour to the Mayan ruins - its only 7.30am and already the thermometer is at 26 degrees celcius. Fortunately only one tourist bus has beaten us to the entrance so the site won't be crowded, we walk through the swanky foyer and out along the gravel path to the main plaza. On our right is a large stone pyramid which we climb and admire the views across the forest to other ruins in this complex - its an amazing setting. This pyramid has the "moving serpent" effect, where a serpent's shadow appears to climb the stairs on the spring and autumn equinox. We spent several hours wandering around the ruins admiring the largest ball court in Mexico, the Skull platform - where they used to display the heads of decapitated enemies, various temples, hot baths and markets - all very impressive. By about 11 we were completely knackered and left the site to get a bite to eat and top up on fluids, just as the majority of tourists were turning up on their day trips from Cancun in the baking sun. Unfortunately just as I'm starting o get better it looks like Claire is coming down with a stomach bug.

The walk back to the hotel takes a little longer than before as the temperature is up into the mid 30's, when we get back to the hotel we get our bags and change into our swimming gear to cool off. Our dip is cut short by a thunderstorm and we shelter in the poolside bar which has seen better days. Half an hour before our bus leaves we change into dry clothes and wait at the bus station, the journey to Cancun passes quickly as we snooze, day dream and watch the secnery pass by. Cancun is the Blackpool of Mexico, lots of sun burnt gringos in holiday gear wandering the streets, we check in to our hotel, and go for a the blandest meal we can think of - hello Pizza Hut, for an Hawiian pizza and coke - hopefully that'll help with our amoeba!
