Packed and ready to roll by 8am, the taxi took us through the early morning streets of Mexico City on our way to the airport. Both of us agree that Mexico City is a beautiful city at this time of day, before the traffic chokes the streets and the corwds invade the pavements. At the airport we checked in for our American Airlines flight behind a group of lively US students returning from their vacation. The flight was thankfully uneventful, a quick pass through immigration, passed the bags on to the transit crew and legged it to our gate for the flight to Phoenix with 5 minutes to spare.
The captain on the internal flight was very chatty giving all sorts of information about lots of baggage from transit passengers (was that us?) to problems with ground staff in Phoenix. He even said "see ya dudes" to three young boys leaving the plane - completely destroyed the air of command they normally maintain. At the airport in Phoenix we ascertain the prices for renting a car for the week whilst we hunt around for our RV and end up getting a pick-up from Budget - the price was very good, its the insurance that kills you. Once we'd figured the automatic gear shift on the steering column the drive out to our motel was pretty straight forward - Claire navigated and I avoided hitting anyone. We checked in, got directions to the nearest mall, found a "Borders" bookshop, bought our Lonely Planet guide to the USA and a "how to buy an RV" guide before wandering around Sears - Claire bought a pair of jeans (she doesn't hang about) and we both oggled the sheer scale of consumerism, feeling shell shocked after the opposite end of the spectrum experienced in Cuba. Dinner was a snack at Arby's - one of many fast food chains to choose from, then back to the motel to relax.
