Once again we were on the road early in the morning taking the scenic route over the mountains surrounding LA - very quiet considering that LA is so close. The only thing we saw of the city was the smog in the distance as we skirted around it to head straight for highway 1 and the Pacific coast. After the barren desert roads the costal road was a sight for sore eyes - sparkling blue sea dotted with surfers on one side and rolling green countryside dotted with fruit farms on the other with the aroma of citrus fruit filling the car. You don't mind being stuck behind a string of RVs on a road like this.
Soon after Santa Barbara we found a campsite and called it a day for driving - it was already 5ish - set up the tent right next to the Pacific ocean. To refresh ourselves after the days drive we took a dip in the cold ocean, jumping into the rollers as they crashed onto the beach. Then dried off, changed and walked into town for dinner. After a while we found a friendly family run steak house and stuffed ourselves on their huge portions in a chintzy dining room surrounded by locals doing the same.
