After our fresh bagel breakfast we continued our drive up highway 1 through farmland and quiet backwaters. The weather was perfect and we listened to the Beach Boys on the car stereo feeling happy and free. In the afternoon we took a detour to visit Hearst Castle which was a very fascinating insight into the lavish lifestyle of the rich. William Randolph Hearst inherited alot of money and land from his father, he was a newspaper magnet (Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane" was based on him) and film producer, Hearst Castle was his country getaway and he spent almost 30 years building and furnishing it with items from around the world - a wonderful place that I could go back to again and again.
By contrast we then visited the Madonna Inn - recommended as the best motel for an overnight stay in the US due to its totally kitsh decor and theme rooms - very 'fun' and American in every way. After all this racing around the countyside we found a campsite (halfway between LA and San Francisco) set up our tent and drove to the nearest town - San Luis Obispo - or S.L.O as its known locall where a farmer's market takes place every Thursday night. The small town of SLO was a hive of activity when we arrived and we strolled up the main street watching the buying and selling of all kinds of produce, listening to the bands setup in the side streets before finding a stall where Will could finally tuck in to some authentic BBQ'd ribs, accompanied by corn on the cob - umm, umm, ummmmm.
