Our day started cold and cloudy so we got on the road early in an attempt to escape the weather and drove north towards Big Sur along the pretty, twisting coastal road. It was early afternoon by the time we arrived in Big Sur the fog had cleared and the day had changed to bright and sunny. We tried a couple of campsites - all already full, before finally finding a very basic state park where you had to lug all your stuff a quarter of a mile along a dirt path from the car - we seem to have alot of gear.
Despite the initial inconvenience we really liked the site, it felt much more like 'real' camping with the absence of RVs and it was only a short walk to the beach which we had to ourselves. In the evening we had dinner as the sun was setting and then lit a fire to keep us warm and amused for the next few hours. It gets quite cold on the coast at night and so without warmth and light the temptation is to go to bed as soon as the sun has set - this is a little too sad, even for us. Without the distractions of TV / Computer and bathroom mirror we chat alot more.
