< Day 150

Day 151 - Tuesday 22nd August 2000

Day 152 >
Having caught up with some emails, gorged ourselves on the free continental breakfast (its like a red rag to a bull with me) we left the comforts of the motel at midday and drove through vast uninhabitated plains - no radio stations out here to the US border. The border crossings are very relaxed in this area - the Alberta / Montana border was a smuggling route for booze during prohibition. Once in Montana we quickly became aware that we were in 'Indian' country by the tee-peesat the side of the road and Indian named sights and shops. We drove a little further to the town of Browning on the Blackfeet Indian reservation.

At the Sleeping Wolf campsite we opted for a night in a tee-pee, after settling into our tee-pee - holes in the top and bottom, hope it won't be too parky tonight, no chance of rain, it hasn't rained since June - we drove into Browning to visit the Museum of the Plains Indian. A fascinating museum with lots of history and artefacts, we were particulary impressed with the elaborate ceremonial costumes, and I wanted to gain some insight into the Blackfeet tribe, whom I'd read about earlier in our trip.

After dinner by the tee-pee, under the watchful eye of two campground dogs, Claire got chatting to the old campground host who seemd keen to tell us about all the murders, alcoholism and social problems amongst the local community. We retired to our tee-pee for a night under the stars - except we couldn't really see them as there was too much haze from the forest fires further south.
